Safe Access to Child Support Services Advocate

 

Summary:

Position for a Victim Advocate in the Child Support Enforcement Agency Division of the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office to work primarily with survivors of domestic violence as they navigate through the child support and legal system. The Child Support Services Advocate will provide safe access to child support services and promote economic stability in cases that involve risk of domestic violence. The Child Support Services Advocate will also provide training and support to the Child Support Enforcement Agency (CSEA), assist with legal clinics and education programs in the community, and participate in agency collaboration with other domestic violence service providers, legal services providers, and the courts. 

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and support for survivors of domestic violence identified by CSEA staff as needing additional assistance and support to navigate the processes involved in establishing paternity and child support orders, and/or enforcing child support orders.
  • The advocate will lead coordination of case action planning and risk mitigation for survivors with internal staff and external collaborative partners.
  • In coordination with the Safe Access Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, identify impacts of trauma, attend hearings with parents and provide other support that allows parents to safely participate in proceedings. Document all case actions in a timely, accurate and comprehensive manner.
  • Assist the CSEA with identifying and implementing safety-informed and trauma-informed best practices to respond to high-risk situations, including conducting lethality assessments and completing universal domestic violence screening, implementing interview guides, providing referrals to community-based service providers, and providing opportunities for safe disclosure of domestic violence concerns.

Conduct training and provide support for CSEA staff.

  • Assist with clinics and educational forums in the community.  Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders including DV advocacy and legal services organizations. 
  • Stay informed concerning the applicable law, rules, procedures, policies, and practices related to the provision of child support services; and other duties as assigned.

Education, Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) required, with a BSW preferred.

Experience working with and advocating for survivors of domestic violence preferred.

Experience working with clients of diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds preferred.

Experience working in a fast-paced legal environment preferred.

Excellent critical-thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

The capacity to manage multiple projects and assignments simultaneously, often with competing deadlines.

Excellent communication skills, including ability to communicate clearly with a wide range of people to both understand, support, and convey the clients’ and advocates’ needs.

Strong collaborative skills.

Attention to detail and a commitment to executing with excellence.
